They say in life, you win some you lose some
While my mind doesn't object, my heart does
She asks me with a silent force I cannot ignore..
Why do humans do this?
Why do we see the force of the heart as an inconvenience
When she doesn’t follow our set plans/timelines
What really do we rush for?
My mind then, quietened a bit by the pangs of the heart
Rises above its everyday frenzy
And poses a question
What does winning even mean?
Was there ever a balance sheet that never threw lives out of balance?
Was there ever a war where the winner didn’t shatter his humanity?
Was there ever a body that lived without a beating heart?
We all know, in the larger scheme of things, with time,
Everything does work itself out
Can we be a little less afraid and allow our hearts to speak a bit more?
Perhaps then, with our heart’s true power leading the way
And the mind being a servant, we wouldn’t have to say..
We win some, we lose some.
Context: This poem came about as a result of conversations with some of my friends who had themselves been laid off and layoffs that occurred in my company. As of the writing of this poem, almost all industries in the US have had layoffs.
